Arab Bank Starts a New Chapter in Supporting Education
21 Sep, 2010
As part of Arab Bank’s corporate social responsibility program, Together, employees recently participated in a book collection initiative to support education in the country and to encourage reading habits among students. To date, the joint effort between Arab Bank and the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, Arab Bank’s cultural and scientific arm, have collected over 20,000 books which will be distributed to disadvantaged schools.
In addition to the book collection, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation is taking a leading role in this initiative by helping establishing libraries for underprivileged schools that have been identified by the Madrasati initiative. Currently two schools in Salt have been identified and plans to build the libraries have begun. A third school will be chosen to have a library built by the end of the year. This initiative comes as part of the Bank’s interest to reduce illiteracy rates and to create a better learning environment for under-equipped schools in Jordan.
Ms. Dina Shoman, Executive Vice President of Branding at Arab Bank commented, “Supporting students in the country is a vital task. The importance of a well educated and literate population as the backbone of society and culture can’t be stressed enough.” She further explained, “This initiative goes beyond increasing literacy rates in the country; we are aiming to get children excited about reading, opening their minds to new concepts and worlds and in turn, improving their overall education.”
Ms. Shoman concluded, “Our employees and the Abdul Hameed Shoman foundation have pledged their commitment to support initiatives which aim at improving education in the country and through the Together program.”
Arab Bank customers can help as well by donating to Madrasati and other specific non-profit organizations under the Together program through the Bank’s channels which include ATMs, Arabi Online, Hala Arabi and at the branches as well as the Together Visa Platinum credit card which automatically donates to five non-profit organizations.
